The National Scrollathon
May 12 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join the Scrollathon at the Haan Museum
This is your chance to participate in the Kennedy Center’s Scrollathon, celebrating the 250th birthday of the Declaration of Independence. The Haan Museum of Indiana Art is representing Indiana to create scrolls for the celebration. The scrolls will represent a diverse group of people throughout Indiana – young, old, and in-between; different cultures and beliefs; artists and non-artists.
The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC selected artists Steven and William Ladd to create a visual art installation in what is envisioned as a spectacular, multidimensional manifestation of national unity. The brothers developed an approach that invites communities to use simple materials to combine fine art, design, and craft to create small artworks, which are then combined to create large-scale art. Participants will be part of something greater than themselves.
The artists will engage communities through partnerships with museums, art centers, and service organizations in all 50 states, five territories, and Native American Community Centers. They will be at the Haan Museum in Lafayette on May 12 to direct the activities. Hour-long sessions will take place at 11AM, 1PM, 4PM, and 6PM, and will include up to 25 people per session.
The Scrollathon’s goal is to bring people together, with the firm belief that art has the power to change lives. The large-scale artworks will be displayed throughout the Kennedy Center campus from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2026, along with portraits of all participants. An array of interactive, virtual initiatives will provide visitors with additional methods to encourage ongoing community participation.
